LIFE CENTER MEALS
On the second Tuesday of odd-numbered months (January, March, May, July, September, and November), volunteers from Temple Lutheran Church provide food and servers for dinner at the Life Center of Eastern Delaware County (63rd and Market Streets in Upper Darby). The Life Center of Eastern Delaware County is an emergency shelter for homeless families and individuals in Delaware County. The Center houses 50 individuals at any one time and serves over 160 residents each year, and is operated by the Community Action Agency of Delaware County.
Over 200 meals are served each evening to individuals who would otherwise go hungry, including those who are staying at the Life Center’s emergency shelter. Temple Lutheran Church is one of over 40 area churches, synagogues, and temples participating in this wonderful program.
We encourage you to donate food and/or your time to make a real difference in the lives of so many. For proper coordination, please sign up to help ahead of time. All food needs to be labeled and brought to the church’s kitchen by 3 pm on the day of the meal. Food can be placed into the Café freezer if delivered earlier than the Sunday before the meal or the refrigerator in the kitchen if brought in that weekend. Fruit can be placed in the plastic bin or on the kitchen counter; please remove from plastic bags..
Let us know what you can bring by using the sign-up sheet in the bulletin for the three to four weeks before serving, sign up online at SignUp Genius or contact Susan Best.
Due to restrictions imposed by the corona virus shut down, we will not be serving the food in July 2020. We will need one volunteer to drive the food to the Life Center where staff will unload the food and the volunteer will drive away. Volunteers are also needed to prepare and pack the meal.
Volunteers to help serve are needed for each meal; this includes transporting food to Life Center, working in kitchen, and serving food in a buffet line.
Volunteers meet at Temple Lutheran Church at 6 pm, carpool to the Life Center, and return at approximately 8 pm.
Let us know if you can help serve by using the sign-up sheet in the bulletin for the three to four weeks before serving, sign up online at SignUp Genius, or contact Mark Procknow (see below).
In addition to providing meals, volunteers often feel they themselves are nourished by the impact they are making.
